A Universe of Stories! Summer Reading to Begin Saturday, June 1


Kerrville, Texas (May 28, 2019) – Summer is almost upon us, and the Butt-Holdsworth Memorial Library will celebrate with our annual Summer Reading Club. Our theme this year for all ages is “A Universe of Stories.”

Registration begins Saturday, June 1 at the library and concludes on Friday, July 26. Participants who choose to register online can email and include their name, age, school name, phone number, and city of residence. Reading logs and summer calendars may be picked up at the Library or downloaded from the Library’s website at Participants can choose to read books, eBooks, or listen to Books on CD or eAudiobooks to earn their hours toward a certificate and an award. The Friends of the Butt-Holdsworth Memorial Library have provided the funding for the Summer Reading Club. Activities include child and teen-friendly professional programs at the Cailloux Theater, family movies, and craft and Lego programs. All programs are free of charge and a library card is not required to participate in the club; however, registration in the Summer Reading program is requested.

This summer, professional children’s performers offer free entertaining and educational programs. All of these performances are free and open to family groups, organized groups, and daycares. Performers this summer include the Austin Reptile Show on June 5, followed by Magician John O’Bryant on June 12, Nancy & Friends Puppet Show on June 19, and Mad Science on June 26. On July 10, the library welcomes back Storybook Theater, Dinosaur George will perform on July 17, and we wrap up with Critterman and his wild animals on July 24. Shows are at 10 a.m. at the Cailloux Theater, except for Critterman, who will perform at the Hill Country Youth Event Center, and are approximately 45 minutes long.

Craft sessions and activities are open to family groups only, and sessions will be held on Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 2:30 p.m. June crafts include “Galaxy Bottles” on June 4, “Koinobori” on June 11, “Alien CD Craft” on June 18, and “Dragon Eggs” on June 25. July crafts include “Constellation Projectors” on July 2, “Beaded Keychains” on July 9, “Flying Rockets” on July 16, “Making a Turtle” on July 23, and “Straw Weaving” on July 30. Pre-School Story Time will be held every Monday at 10 a.m. in the library meeting room. Story Time is geared toward ages 2-6 and will include stories, songs, and rhymes. Calm and Color will follow Pre-School Story Time at 10:30 a.m. in the library meeting room.

Our popular Lego Club will be gearing up to build again this summer every Thursday, June 6 through July 25, at 1:30 p.m. These sessions are open to family groups only. Daycare groups who have registered their participants with the Summer Reading Club may call and schedule a Lego session at the library. Family Movie afternoons will be held after Lego Club at 3 p.m.

Teens are invited to participate in the Summer Reading Program as well! Teen hangouts will be held on Mondays in the library meeting room. The hangouts will include movies on June 3, June 17, July 1, July 15, and July 29. Teen Knitting 101 will be held on June 10, June 24, July 8, and July 22.

The final event of the 2019 Summer Reading Club will be the Awards Pizza Party held at the library on July 31 from 1:30-3 p.m. We ask that only members of family groups whose children have read at least six hours or whose teens have read at least four books attend this event.
